2022 Nissan Qashqai: what is e-POWER technology?

With the Qashqai e-POWER, Nissan is making a slightly crazy promise: to combine the benefits of an electric vehicle without ever needing to recharge it. But how does this e-POWER engine really work?

Pioneer in the electric car with the Leaf, Nissan has grasped the challenges of this type of engine. Electric has many advantages, including a smooth, quiet and responsive ride. But two disadvantages still block many people: autonomy and recharging.

The electric motor, alone to propel the Qashqai e-POWER

The new Nissan Qashqai, equipped with the e-POWER engine, promises to be the best of both worlds. To achieve this, Nissan has combined a 140 kW electric motor, which is the only one to tow the car, and a 158 hp petrol engine.

The latter is never connected to the wheels. The heat engine serves as a kind of generator, and powers a small battery. The electric motor, whose function is to move the car, draws on this battery, or is powered directly by the petrol engine.

In use, the softness and silence of electric

On a daily basis, you therefore benefit from all the advantages of electric driving. No gearbox, immediate torque for responsive acceleration, and above all great silence in use. Indeed, the internal combustion engine changes engine speed only slightly. Nissan was therefore able to isolate it much more effectively than a conventional engine. Result: you hardly hear it.

Forget charging stations!

Even after hundreds of kilometers of electric driving, zero stress. No need to keep an eye on a range counter, or look for a terminal. No need to spend long breaks waiting for your battery to fill up, either. Simply fill up with gas, like a classic car. Practice !

Especially since you will consume less than in a petrol vehicle of comparable power – 5.3 – 5.4 L/100km in the WLTP combined cycle – thanks to the optimization of the internal combustion engine for recharging needs.

An electric car that you never recharge, bet won for the Nissan Qashqai e-POWER!
