A state-of-the-art health simulation center

Inaugurated in 2017, the Health Simulation Center (CSS) at Cégep de Valleyfield continues to be improved in order to offer the most realistic experience to students in the Nursing and Respiratory Therapy programs.

This place of learning aims to immerse students in realistic situations, using state-of-the-art teaching equipment. Currently, the CSS has three high-fidelity mannequins that allow students to experience a wide variety of clinical situations that they may not necessarily encounter during their internships. Between now and the holiday season, two new models will be arriving, a newborn and a pediatric model.

With this kind of equipment, teachers can create specific scenarios for each student. Right in the control center, they can fly the manikin and talk to the student as if they were a real patient. The student can then interact with the manikin, take vital signs, intubate or even deliver.

Unique facilities in Montérégie

The Cégep de Valleyfield CSS was the first of its kind in the entire territory of Montérégie, making the educational institution avant-garde.

Respiratory therapy students visit it several times, totaling more than 200 hours, not counting the hours provided for success support measures. On the nursing side, an average of 235 students attend each session. A student of this program will visit it at least eight days in his academic journey.

Over $1.2M investment

Since the opening of the CSS, the investment of the Cégep de Valleyfield is estimated at more than $1.2 million, which excludes the time of the human resources involved in the project. Note that a high fidelity dummy costs more than $100,000. The premises have also been completely custom designed to reproduce the rooms and equipment of Quebec hospitals.

“We worked in collaboration with the Cégep’s material resources employees so that they could create spaces that were as close to reality as possible. We even went to take pictures in the hospitals in order to optimize the realism of the CSS”, explain Anick Montpetit and Thanya St-Michel, managers of the center.

Upcoming open days

Those interested in visiting the CSS du Cégep de Valleyfield will be able to do so during the open house to be held on October 19, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Additional information will follow soon on the educational institution’s various platforms. .
