Air Liquide’s autothermal reforming technology was selected for the production of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia, a first in Japan

PARIS, January 10, 2023–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Regulatory News:

Citing its engineering subsidiary Air Liquide Engineering & Construction, Air Liquide (Paris:AI) benefits from a comprehensive portfolio of innovative technological solutions to support its industrial customers in their decarbonization projects. Autothermal reforming (ATR) is one of the latest technologies used: in combination with carbon capture technology, it enables efficient large-scale production of hydrogen and low-carbon carbon. Among the leading companies at ATR, Air Liquide’s technology has been selected for an initial demonstration project, owned and operated by INPEX CORPORATION, aimed at the production of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia.

While there are other reliable solutions on the market such as B. Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) with carbon capture, ATR is one of the most suitable approaches for large-scale, low-hydrogen production units. Combined with carbon capture, customers can benefit from improved energy efficiency, reduced capital expenditure and a simplified production process based on a single reactor capable of capturing up to 99% of the carbon in highly integrated industrial plants.

Air Liquide is one of the leading ATR companies with proprietary process-related technologies used for large-scale synthesis gas production applications. Air Liquide Engineering & Construction will now use this technology for the production of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia in a pilot project owned and operated by INPEX CORPORATION, a Japanese oil and gas exploration and production company. ATR technology will contribute to the development of a project aimed at producing low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia1, in the Hirai district of Kashiwazaki, a city in Japan, in Niigata prefecture. The entire project will be the first demonstration project in Japan to integrate low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production with carbon capture.

Michael J GraffDeputy CEO of Air Liquide Group, said: With solid expertise, Air Liquide relies on a portfolio of efficient, reliable and innovative solutions and technologies to support its customers and contribute to the decarbonization of the industry. This is at the core of our ambitions. We are pleased to be collaborating with INPEX CORPORATION to be one of the contributors to the development of this first low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia demonstration project in Japan. »
