To work, the first connected watch from Google would need a dedicated application.
The first connected watch from Googlethe PixelWatch, was partially formalized during the Google I/O 2022 developer conference, which took place in May. Besides the design and some features, the American firm has not said much. However, we have just discovered that an Android smartphone application would be required in order to use the Pixel Watch. The 9to5Google site has just discovered in the next version of Google Play Services the existence of a “Google Pixel Watch app”.
An Android application to use the Pixel Watch
On May 11, 2022, Google came quickly to present the Pixel Watch before announcing that its full officialization would be during the fall, alongside its new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. However, the latter could not be used directly after unpacking it.
9to5Google has indeed discovered that a dedicated application for the connected watch was present in the source code of Google Play Services 22.22. Unlike other connected watches under Wear OS, the Pixel Watch would therefore not require the famous companion app Wear OS.
The site explains more precisely that the Pixel Watch application would be necessary to configure certain functionalities, such as “Smart Unlock”, a novelty discovered in the code by 9to5Google and which would allow you to automatically unlock your smartphone if the Pixel Watch is on your wrist. . They discovered that before they could configure this feature, users first had to ” connect the watch to your smartphone using the‘Google Pixel Watch app “.
As the French site points out Frandroid, this announcement is not really good news. Indeed, Google seems to want to complicate the configuration of connected watches under Wear OS by introducing another application dedicated to this use. For its part, Samsung does the same for its connected products, such as the Galaxy Watch 4 watches.
The Google ecosystem is also accompanied by a dedicated application for its Pixel Buds headphones. The fact of having to require many applications to take full advantage of Google’s products thus complicates the user experience, especially when you know that Android is Google’s operating system for smartphones. We could thus have thought that the management of the brand’s connected products would be directly integrated into the OS.
