Apple is presenting this week “to developers” – but in reality to the whole world – the novelties promised by its new operating system, baptized iOS 16. It should equip the future iPhone 14, expected in the fall, but also most of the previous smartphones of the brand (up to iPhone 7). Detail review.
1. A (finally) customizable lock screen
At Apple, it’s a “revolution”! Faced with ever more numerous and aggressive competitors, the firm at the apple is obliged to adopt what works in others. From now on, the iPhone’s lock screen will be able to integrate widgets such as alarm, weather, fitness data… or any other information from an application (upcoming delivery, carpooling request, etc.). ).
Another long-awaited change: for the first time, it is planned to modify the display of the time, its appearance but also the font used, etc. With, as always with Apple, particular care given to the aesthetics of the result.
The main subject of the photo may for example appear in front of the time, while the background will remain… behind. To see if this rendering will be possible with any image, or only with the wallpapers provided by Apple.
2. Erasable and editable messages!
As is already possible in most messaging applications (Whatsapp, etc.), a message sent but not yet received or read by its recipient may be modified… or even deleted. Provided that it is sent with Apple’s “Messages” application, and not as a simple SMS (with a green background, on the iPhone).
Another “revolution”, likely to avoid, at the margin, untimely sending errors, often funny but not always…
3. Better search in emails
Again, the features of Android have long included what Apple promises for the fall: the search engine of the “Mail” application should improve the relevance of results. By analyzing the content of messages, but also attachments, links, contacts, etc. “Mail” also promises to remind you – as Gmail does – to reply to an e-mail that you may have forgotten, to schedule a delivery, or even to notify you of a missing attachment.
4. Live translated text
Thanks to “artificial intelligence”, the iOS 16 “Live Text” function will detect text in images and immediately translate it into the desired language, from any language, as Google Translate already does.
If iOS 16 says to extend this possibility to video, it is actually about doing it… on pause. In other words, on a still image.
The functionality will also allow you to directly convert currencies or units of measurement, for example.
5. Detach the subject from an image
The function is more playful than anything else, but it impresses: Apple’s “Visual Search” allows, in its latest version, to select a part of the image – the subject of a photo, for example – and to “detach” it from the background.
The subject thus separated from its background can then be dragged and used in another application, such as a message.
6. CarPlay, a very (too?) ambitious system
With its new CarPlay, iOS 16 offers a real complete ecosystem for the automobile, likely to completely replace the on-board car software, all in multiscreen.
On this point, the presentation won over the audience, as the possibilities offered are numerous and ambitious: CarPlay interacts with the vehicle’s audio system, makes it possible to control the temperature of the car, to display and manage the level of fuel or oil, or even to integrate the weather. Driving directly from the iPhone is not far away.
But this new “revolution” first assumes perfect compatibility with the vehicles produced. It’s a safe bet that the oldest will not benefit from it.
According to our colleagues from Numerama, several manufacturers have quite simply refused to comment on the subject, a few others being rather skeptical, such as BMW: “Currently, we are focusing on improving our iDrive interface and, as part of this development, we will continue to integrate Apple’s ecosystem. We will evaluate how the announced innovations will be added. In other words, today, it is not ready.
Volvo, for its part, ensures on the one hand that its future vehicles will be “compatible with the new generation of CarPlay”… while using the competition, with Android Automotive!
Apple had already seen itself, with iOS 13, in 2019, closing the door to its previous version of CarPlay… Apart from a close and total collaboration with a car manufacturer, the full experience seems out of reach.
7. A screen always on?
A customizable screen, more dynamic, scalable… but also always on? According to the first testimonies of developers who have accessed the beta version, Apple will integrate with iOS 16 its own version of “Always on display” that Android and/or Samsung users, for example, already know.
Clearly, the screen would permanently show certain information such as the time, the alarm, and selected notifications. All in general on a black background, so as not to consume too much. The function had been removed from the iPhone 13 Pro, due to excessive overconsumption. But Apple would have solved the problem, by lowering the refresh rate of the screen in “sleep” mode, with OLED panels which only use energy for the pixels on.
8. Take back control with “Concentration”
Apple is well aware that ever-increasing features are intrusive. With its “Concentration” functionality, more powerful and more intuitive, it is in principle possible to limit the effects. All this even on the locked screen, which can only display a selection of alerts and information, to be configured according to your needs.
It is up to everyone to choose, then, if they absolutely need to be informed in real time of the weather or of the arrival of an email…
9. Beware of the “buy now, pay later” function
Apple on Monday announced its entry into the buy-now-pay-later payment solutions market, which have become very popular during the pandemic.
In the United States, starting this fall, approved users using the Apple Pay service will be able to choose to pay for a purchase in four installments over six weeks, “without interest or fees of any kind”.
“Apple Pay Later”, the new feature, “allows you to easily view, track and reimburse”, details the press release from the Californian group.
The service will depend on the Mastercard network, but Apple did not specify which bank would be responsible for the credits.
The apple brand is rushing into a breach already well exploited by Affirm, Afterpay or Paypal, by making buyers captive while avoiding costly credit card interest.
During the pandemic, many merchants have borne these costs, causing consumption to explode through such systems. Apple, which sells one in three smartphones in the world, wants its share of the cake today.
In the United States, authorities already say they are “concerned” about the potential accumulation of debt, compliance with consumer protection laws and the use of data collected by companies offering these products.
The market, estimated at $5 billion in 2021, could reach $40 billion by 2030.
10. A release planned for the fall
The beta (test) version of iOS 16 is already available for a reduced audience: it is accessible to developers, upon registration.
The first public beta is expected to launch in July. The commercial version should equip the future iPhone 14 and its possible variations (mini, Pro, Max …), next fall. Future iPads will also feature it.
11. Which phones will receive iOS 16?
Apart from iPhone 14, most devices currently in circulation should be able to update iOS to version 16. According to Apple, all iPhones since version 7 and all iPads since iPad Air 3 and iPad Mini 5 are concerned.
Here is the list of smartphones announced as compatible: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone SE 2020, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7.
For iPads: iPad Pro 2022, iPad Pro 2021, iPad Pro 12.9 inch (2016+), iPad Pro 1015 inch (2016+), iPad Pro 11 inch (2018+), iPad Air 3, iPad Air 4, iPad Air 5 (2022), iPad 6, iPad 7, iPad 8, iPad 9, iPad Mini 5, iPad Mini 6.
Obviously, the older and less powerful ones are likely to operate more slowly with a more power-hungry system.
