Testnets in the garage! – Developers Ethereum (ETH) are planning more changes as we approach The Merge. They want to get rid of some secondary networks got a little too bulky.
Closure of testnets on Ethereum
The Ethereum development team announced in a post on June 21, 2022, the closure of the three testnets, Ropsten, Kiln and Rinkebyafter The Merge.
The developers have thus provided a diary to allow users of these networks to gradually disengage:
- Kiln will be shut down after the Ethereum mainnet switch from proof-of-stake to proof-of-work. This event is scheduled for the second half of 2022;
- Ropsten will be closed in the fourth quarter of 2022;
- Sepolia will replace Rinkeby, who will not be affected by The Merge. As for Sepolia, theMoving from this testnet to proof-of-stake is scheduled for the second or third quarter of 2022. Rinkby will then be firm a year after this transition from Sepolia.

Future of testnets: Too big to last?
The developers remind that although these testnets are used for experimentation, they are full-fledged blockchainscopies of the mainnet.
These testnets thus have a state and a history that evolve over time. And because of this evolution, the nodes encounter difficulties in maintaining these networks when they get heavier.
It is for these same reasons that the developers had removed other testnets in the past: the Pyrmont Beacon Chain testnet in 2021, and that of the Kovan execution layer more recently.
Towards a lighter testnet
By removing Ropsten, Kiln and Rinkeby, developers can focus much more on testnets Goerli and Sepolia.
But why do developers favor these networks over others? In the case of Goerli, this testnet benefits from the support of a strong community and solid infrastructure.
According to ETH developers, its state would be closest to mainnet. In this case, Goerli can then be used to test smart contract interactions.
Concerning Sepolia, this testnet is rather recent. For the moment, its condition and history are therefore rather light. Currently, this network is then quick to synchronize. Also, running a node requires relatively less data storage.
The developers are thus preparing for the aftermath of The Merge, even if they are currently encountering a difficulty in dropping a major bomb for the network update.
