ANALYSIS – The difficulties related to the deployment of this technology are worrying as the ADSL shutdown is looming.

The fiber turns into itchy hair. Minister, local elected officials, representatives of associations, all came to the Connected Territories meetings organized by the telecoms regulator (Arcep), Thursday morning, with their share of complaints. “Let’s not taint the deployment of fiber by defects that are still very present and perennial even if they are marginal“, declared Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister Delegate for the Digital Transition, recalling that “France has the widest fiber network in Europe“. The advantages of fiber are well known, it is a technology that consumes three times less energy than copper (used for ADSL) and which makes it possible to exchange large volumes of data. “The fiber is essential to provide an answer to medical deserts, to allow local craftsmen to respond to calls for tenders, to farmers to fill out their CAP files…” recalled Françoise Gatel, senator of Ille-et-Vilaine.
