OVHcloud presents its ‘Hybrid Immersion Liquid Cooling’ cooling technology

The best of water cooling and immersion cooling according to the company.

OVHcloud lifts the veil on its cooling technology called Hybrid Immersion Liquid Cooling. According to the firm, it “brings together the best of both worlds: water cooling and immersion cooling”.

This solution is presented as a vertical rack in library format which can accommodate 48 servers (1U) or 24 servers (2U). The OVHcloud Hybrid Immersion Liquid Cooling solution involves servers each housed in an independent book-format chassis where all the electronics are submerged in a dielectric fluid. The hottest elements, namely the CPU and the GPU, benefit from a water cooling system directly on the chip with a convection coil placed in the tank and deploying via its serpentine shape an additional cooling surface.

Several advantages

This hybrid design has already resulted in the filing of more than 16 patent applications. According to OVHcloud, its solution offers many advantages over other Immersion Cooling solutions currently available on the market, such as:

• Passive rack design with no pump or fan = no rack power consumption for cooling and quiet DC;
• Ability to run high power racks with data center inlet temperature up to 45°C;
• Reduction of up to 20.7% in the electricity consumption of the cooling infrastructure at the DC level (compared to the OVHcloud water cooling solution);
• Scalable and stackable design to deliver two to three times the density of 37U/m2 for high computing power density;
• Better recapture of waste heat = opportunities for heat recovery systems,
• A certain number of components are no longer necessary for a reduced CAPEX;
• Reduced OPEX thanks to lower electricity consumption;
• Improved PPUE to 1.004 (Partial PUE – OVHcloud will communicate PUE values ​​when “the data obtained will be significant over a sufficiently large period of time and for a specific location”).
