Tarbes: all green lights for the University of Technology

If this 2022-2023 academic year will already take place under the aegis of the University of Technology, it is on January 1, 2024 that this new structure will be fully operational.

“A new step has been taken in the sense that we are moving forward in the institutional constitution. Today, all the lights are green”, announced, during a press briefing, the director of ENIT, Jean-Yves Fourquet, praising “a good project for Tarbes and for Occitania”. A project that has also found general support within the two current establishments, and future components, ENIT and IUT, but also with local authorities. And it is the students who will be the first beneficiaries since the future university will increase the capacity of reception, by around 1,000 places. But it will also be more training offered, more research and more opportunities for bridges between existing training.

“Presented several times for information, this project has found broad support and we are hopeful that all the stars will be aligned”, expressed his wishes for the director of the IUT, Jean-Yves Chambrin. “Everyone saw from the start the interest of this university and it is a great day for us, everything is now on the way. I would like to congratulate the two directors and all the teams. All the problems have been solved and we are ready”, rejoiced the president of Medef65, Antoine Nunès.

The challenge is multiple because if this project aims to “give ambition to the young people of this territory”, local companies also have significant recruitment needs. It is therefore the entire economy of the territory which should benefit from the creation of this university, the size of which will be one of its assets in terms of recognition and international visibility. Enough to allow young people to broaden their field but also to encourage foreign students to come and continue their studies in Bigorre. “Our territory has virtues for attracting talent, particularly in masters and doctorates”, underlined Jean-Yves Fourquet.

But not only, and the Agglo is also working on it, with a view to economic development of the territory, as Gilles Craspay recalled, also praising “a complete course that goes up to the doctorate. And with this new structure, we will be able to create sectors that we don’t have”. In initial course but also in continuous training. All this in partnership with local businesses, already widely represented on school boards, in order to allow them to adapt training to the needs of recruiters.

“We are currently working on the reorganization of the entity. We will have to finalize the operational and institutional work. And to find a name”, detailed the Jean-Yves Chambrin calendar. Emerging at the end of 2020, the project is therefore continuing on its way at a steady pace with a view to formalization from January 1, 2024 and a first official start to follow.

What to reinforce “the will of the Occitanie region to rebalance the territory in terms of university offer”, as underlined by the regional councilor, Pascale Péraldi. With its new University, Tarbes will confirm its status as a balanced university town.
