After Salvetat-Saint-Gilles in Haute-Garonne in September, Toulouse records his first two cases of autochthonous dengue fever announcement this monday evening the Occitanie Regional Health Agency (ARS). This is a first in the Pink City…

A few weeks ago, a suspected case of dengue had led to a mosquito control operation in Toulouse, a district of rue de Metz. Without continuation.

One home

The ARS specifies:

“The first case concerns a person who has not traveled, residing in the Amidonniers district. A second case of dengue fever with no notion of travel has also been identified in the same household”.

Mosquito Control Tuesday

“To limit the risk of transmission of this virus via tiger mosquitoes”, a mosquito control operation will take place overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday in this district.

“The residents concerned will also be approached this Wednesday by investigators from the ARS and Public Health France, as part of a door-to-door health investigation. A health information note on the tiger mosquito and dengue fever will be given to them at this
opportunity, ”explains the ARS. The classic procedure when a case of dengue fever is declared.

A second operation in a few days

A second mosquito control operation will then be carried out in a few days, as happened in La Salvetat-Saint-Gilles. This is the procedure to follow when the case of dengue fever is indigenous.

“This two-stage treatment, one week apart, responds to a national protocol that has been evaluated and appears to be effective. The objective is to kill all the mosquitoes located in an area of 300 meters around the focus of dengue, remembering that a mosquito does not move beyond 30 to 50 meters during its life”, explained there is a few weeks Jean-Sébastien Dehecq, sanitary engineer at the Occitanie Regional Health Agency, about the situation in Salvetat-Saint-Gilles. A situation that is therefore repeated in Toulouse.

The clinical signs of dengue fever

In addition, all residents of the Amidonniers district who present clinical signs suggestive of a dengue fever infection are called upon to consult their doctor. These suggestive symptoms are, in the absence of another established diagnosis:

  • a high fever (>38.5°C) with a sudden onset.
  • associated with at least one other clinical sign such as headache, muscle pain or
    articular or lumbar.
  • in the absence of cough, runny nose, sore throat, difficulty breathing, or infected wounds.

What is autochthonous dengue

Generally mild, dengue is an infection that usually occurs in tropical areas. Most of the time, the cases of dengue reported in mainland France are cases having contracted the disease during a stay in a tropical zone. They come back infected, we are talking about imported cases. However, the tiger mosquito present on our territory is capable, if it bites an infected person returning from a trip, of transmitting the virus after a few days to a person who has not travelled. We then speak of an indigenous case. The disease can then manifest itself in the person who has been bitten within an average of 4 to 7 days after the infecting bite.
